Disable Hibernation in Vista

Disable hibernation in Vista
When a system goes into hibernation, Windows places a file on your hard drive that it uses to store data about your current session and running programs.

If you are using Windows XP, then Disabling the Hibernation feature is fairly straightforward using the Power Options in the Control Panel But if you are a Vista user then its bit trickier to disable it, since there's no graphical way present to disable this.

In order to enable your system to Hibernate, Windows reserves the space just for Hibernating purpose and creates a hidden file (c:\hiberfil.sys) which is roughly equal in size to the amount of RAM your system has.

Hence if you have 1GB of RAM, then you'll have a corresponding hiberfil.sys file which is will also be 1GB in size.

If you do not use Hibernation Mode, you may disable it to clear the file off your hard drive to free up (that reserved) space.

To disable hibernation using the Command Prompt, do the following:

1. Click Start, All Programs, and then right-click Command Prompt.
2. From the menu, click "Run As Administrator".
3. If User Account Control prompts you to allow the action, click Continue.
4. In the command prompt window, type :
powercfg –h off

5. Close the Command Prompt window.

That's it !! We have just disabled Hibernation and freed up some disk space.

But if you later decide to enable Hibernation, you can do so by following all the steps but this time type:
powercfg –h on
instead of
powercfg –h off

You can check disabled hibertion, by going to the power options, the Hibernation state will be disabled as an option.

Another way to ensure that hibernation is disbaled is that
1. Go to properties of the partition of the drive where Vista is installed.
2. Check the free space and note down it down.
3. Restart the system
4. Check the free space of that drive again.
It will show you more free space :-D

Removing Vista from Your Dual-Boot System

windows xp vista
If you use Windows Vista with XP simultaneously then removing Vista from this dual-boot system probably sounds like a strange thing to do. But due to any reason you might need to remove Vista from your System.

Let’s say your Hard drive is running out of space and you may want to remove Vista from your system, to reclaim the hard drive space.

Here are the few easy steps we need to follow to uninstall Vista from the dual-boot situation:

1. Boot your computer in to Windows XP.
2. Insert Vista DVD in the DVD drive.
3. Now Go to “Start” and “Run”.

Type in
X:\boot\bootsect.exe /nt52 ALL /force
(replacing X: with the drive letter of your Vista DVD Drive).

4. Restart the computer, and you will notice the boot selection menu is now gone.

5. If you had Vista on a separate partition you may now format that partition/drive.

6. After Restart, now Remove two files (Boot.BAK & Bootsect.BAK) from your XP drive’s root folder (C:)
(These were backup files of your previous bootloader, which are now no longer useful.)

7. Restart the system to ensure it still works.

You now have returned your computer to its previous state with Windows XP only, without Vista and without the new bootloader.

Disable Popping Mini Toolbar in Office 2007

Office 2007 Mini ToolbarIn Office 2007 when a you select text and then move your cursor over the selection, an annoying little toolbar called the “Mini Toolbar” shows up.

Designed to give you quick access to common formatting options (like bold, underline, and italic, for example), this new feature is ON by default.

Unfortunately, not all users particularly like the Mini Toolbar, but if you want to turn it off, you can.

Word 2007, Excel 2007 and Powerpoint 2007 must be the most common applications you use in Office 2007 suite.
This Mini toolbar is by default Enabled in all these Products, so if you want to disable it, you have to open these applications one by one to disable it.

Here is the option to search for, to disable this.

1. Press Office Button in top left of window.
2. Press (Word/PowerPoint/Excel) Options.
3. On the Main window that appears, deselect the checkbox "Show Mini Toolbar on Selection".

Office 2007 Disabling Mini Toolbar
I personally recommend you disable it. If you are usually selecting text or right-clicking and copying or cutting text, the problem with this toolbar is that it gets in your way and hinders your normal method of work.

But It’s upto you to decide if you like it or not.

Live Chat with your site's visitors using Yahoo! PingBox

Yahoo! Pingbox
Yahoo! introduced its new Yahoo! Messenger Pingbox service, a new application that once embedded into your blog, website or social network page, lets visitors chat you live and anonymously without needing to download or even sign into their Yahoo! Messenger.

The good news is that, like the visitors you’re anonymous too.
IMs between you and each Pingbox visitor are private. Visitors to your page never see your Yahoo! ID.

Only you and person you are chatting with can see the IMs, even if there are multiple visitors viewing your web page.

Pingbox is great tool for giving your site/page/profile visitors a quick way to chat with you.

If you own many sites, you can make separate Pingbox for each.
You can make as many Pingboxes as you want.

To Make your ping box.

Sign in with your Yahoo! ID Here

Click "Create a PingBox" button.

Customize your Pingbox, give it a name to save.

MS Excel 2007 - Tips-o-Tricks

Another most important part of Ms Office 2007 suite, Ms Excel is the most widely used spreadsheet application around the world.

Here I am sharing some really useful shortcuts and time-saving features of Ms Excel 2007.

Insert Date & Time

To insert the current date in a cell, press CTRL + ;
To insert the time, press CTRL + SHIFT + ;

Colour your Sheet Tabs

You can colour-code the tabs on your Excel spreadsheets for easier navigation. Click the tab you'd like to colour, then right click on it and choose Tab Color. Select the colour you want and click OK.

Your tabs can be coloured however you like.

Hide your Sheets

Right click on the sheet tab you want to hide, and select Hide. To reveal it, right click on any sheet tab and choose Unhide.

Clear Formatting

Highlight the cells you wish to reset, right click the Home menu, and under "Editing" sub section, Click small eraser button and , select Clear Formats.

Sort things Out

You can rearrange the data in a spreadsheet any way you like by clicking the column(s) or row(s) you want and then right click and select sort and in sub menu, select any sorting option you want.

All together Now

To select the entire spreadsheet in one shot, click the box in the top left corner that joins the columns and rows.

Mathematics & Formulas

Excel supports a whole range of maths to calculate the data you need. The basics are easy enough to get a grip on:

•To start a formula, you need to enter = in a cell first
•Use the row and column addresses to perform operations

•You can use +, -, / (divide), * (multiply), ^ (power of) and brackets to separate the operations. So for example, typing =(A1+B1)/C2*D5^2 would take the value in A1, add it to the value in B1, then divide it by the value in C2 multiplied by the square of the value in D5. As you update entries in A1, B1, C2 and D5, the formula will also update to reflect this.

•To simply add up values quickly, use the SUM command. For example, =SUM(A1:A6) would add up all the values in A1, A2, A3, A4, A5 and A6.

You can see the formula for cell C9 in the formula field (shown next to the fx). Here it's adding up all the values from C3 through C8, even though the numbers only start at C3. If any values were updated, or a number put into any cell, say C2, the value in C9 would also change to show the total sum.

The Extend-Series Function

The best way to explain this function is a to demonstrate with an example.

1.Type out in a vertical column: 1, 2.. then select the entries as shown below

2.See the little dot at the bottom right-hand corner of the selection? Left click and drag that down a few cells, then release. Low and behold, Excel will figure out the number series and will add the extra values automatically.

You can also do the same with formulas, and it will alter all the cells referenced in the formulas accordingly.

Make Excel 2007 save to ".xls" format by default

Like other MS Office 2007 products, Excel 2007 also uses a highly incompatible .xlsx file format for saving files by default, which makes it difficult to share with friends and colleagues who don't have the same version.

To change this:
1.Click the Office button in the top left
2.Click the Excel Options button
3.On the left-hand side, select Save
4.Change the Save files in this format drop down box to Excel 97 - 2003 Workbook
5.Click OK

Make Tabbed-browsing smoother for Firefox

Firefox must have add onTab Mix Plus is one of the best Firefox extensions which makes the tabbed browsing even better and smoother.

Tab Mix Plus enhances Firefox's tab browsing capabilities.

It includes such features as duplicating tabs, controlling tab focus, tab clicking options, undo closed tabs and windows, plus much more.
It also includes a full-featured session manager.

Tab Mix Plus can change the close button on each tab feature, control the rows of tabs when you exceed the width of the browser window, and almost everything else associated with tabs.

You can:

~Use your scroll wheel to browse tabs.
~Control tab switching via mouse gestures.
~Specify where Web pages will open, whether in a new tab or the current one or in a separate new window.
~Duplicate a tab.
~Protect a tab from closing.
~Merge tabs from several windows.
~Prevents those annoying blank tabs when files are downloading.

Firefox Tab Mix Plus
Another very useful feature is a session manager that restores tabs that were open the last time the browser shut down.

To see more options, go to "Tools" menu of Firefox and select "Tab Mix Plus Options".

I'll strongly recommend this add on for all Firefox users.

Password Protect your MS Office Files

MS Office 2007 Protected logoMost of our document files often contain confidential information and they are supposed to be secured from unauthorized access.
Some of us store personal information in a Word file and we may not want others to intrude in our privacy.

MS Office has this ability to protect your document files from unauthorized editing.
But most of us are still unaware of this extremely useful feature of Ms Office 2007.

There are actually two ways to protect your files.
1. Make it read only, so that the reader will only be able to read it & unable to edit it.
2. Make it password protected, so the reader has to enter the password in order to open it.

To secure your files, here's the procedure.

All popular products of Ms Office 2007 has this Password Protection feature.
So here I'm explaining Ms Word, Ms Excel and MS PowerPoint.

MS WORD 2007

1. Mark as final

First and easy step is to Mark your files as "Final".

This is the lowest level of protection of your documents files.
In which No password is required to protect the files.

Document can be viewed without entering any password.

This feature is to show that the document is finished and requires no further editing.
But if any of your co-worker/colleague feels that still something's missing he can disable the "Mark as Final" and edit the file.

To Mark your document as "Final":

1. Click the Office button.
2. Place your cursor over "Prepare"
3. From the sub menu, click "Mark as Final".
Word 2007 Mark as Final

MS WORD 2007 will alert you that "This document will be marked as Final and then saved"
Click OK and save the file where you want.

Document "Marked as Final" cannot be edited. All the buttons and tabs are disabled.

Documents Marked as Final will have a small stamp icon in the left bottom of the Word Window
Mark as Final icon
If you want to edit this type of document, simply click Office button>Prepare and click (already pressed) "Mark as Final" button.

2. Password protection to Editing

This is an intermediate level of protection.
In which password is required to make changes in the document.

Document can still be viewed without entering password.

To password protect your files from editing.

1. Click Office Button
2. Click Save or Save As.
3. Click Small Tools Buttons at bottom left, from the menu select "General Options".
Word General Options
4. Click "Protect Document" button.

Word 2007 Protect Document
5. A Task Panel (in right side) will pop up in the document behind.
6. Click Cancel to hide this "Save As" dialogue box.
7. Now in the task Panel, check the "Allow only this of editing in the document"
Word 2007 File Enforce Protection

By default, "No changes (Read Only)" is selected, leave it as it is.

8. Click "Yes Start Enforcing Protection" button at the bottom.

9. Enter the desired password.
Word 2007 Enter Password
10. Save the document and close.

Now entering that password will allow you to make changes in the documents.

Word 2007 files password protected

**************************************************

3. Password protection to Open

This can be considered as highest level of protection offered by Ms Office 2007.
In which password is required to open the file.

Document can't be viewed without entering the password.

To Password Protect your files to open:

1. Click Office button.
2. Click Save or Save As.
3. Click small "Tools" button, select General Options.

4. Now enter the desired password in "Password to Open" text box.
Re enter it.
Word 2007 Password to Open
5. Save and Close the file.

Now only that password can open the file to view or edit.

You can choose both "Password protection to Open", and "Password Protection to editing" at the same time at same file.

MS Excel 2007

Mark as Final is not available in Excel 2007
Only Simple Password protection can be applied.

To protect Excel Sheets, repeat the same steps:

1. Click Office Button.
2. Save or Save As.
3. Tools button> General Options.
4. Enter password to "Open" or "Modify".
MS Excel 2007 Password Protected
5. Save and Close Excel.

MS Power Point 2007

Again Only password protection is available to protect modification and opening.
- No "Mark as Final"

To Protect presentations:

1. Click Office Button
2. Save or Save As.
3. Tools>General Options.

4. Enter desired password to either for modification or opening protection.
MS Power Pint 2007 Password Protected
Re enter password to confirm.
5. Save and Exit.

The only drawback is that your documents can still be deleted even they are password-protected. So frustrated person who has been guessing the
password to open the document can still delete it.

So you must consider for backing up your files some where else.

Or if you want more security then give "Lock Folder XP" a try to protect your files.
